Developing Primary Chinese Oral Answers
Develop one clear answer with a relevant reason, a concrete example and a closing connection while keeping the response natural.

Develop one clear idea instead of adding unrelated length
Develop one clear idea by stating a position, explaining one relevant reason, giving a concrete example, and connecting the example back to the question. This four-part ladder helps a learner make the reasoning audible without memorising a long script. A developed oral answer is not automatically a long answer. Each sentence should help the listener understand the same central idea, and the speaker should remain ready to respond naturally if the question changes or a follow-up is asked.
MOE’s 2024 Primary Chinese syllabus includes speaking goals for organising content, speaking around a topic in an orderly way, offering simple analysis and explanation, and expressing ideas clearly and completely. Its oral-interaction goals also include responding appropriately and choosing content and language for audience and context. These goals provide the broad curriculum context. The answer–reason–example–connection ladder is original PAIRO editorial material, not an official MOE response format, examination question, scoring rubric or marking rule.
Use the ladder flexibly. A fluent learner may combine the answer and reason in one sentence, place the example earlier, or finish without an explicit 所以 when the connection is already clear. A learner who needs more support can rehearse one step at a time. The structure should reveal relationships, not replace listening and spontaneous language. Chinese, Higher Chinese and Foundation Chinese also have different emphases; this article is scoped to Chinese / Higher Chinese and does not claim identical expectations across courses or Primary levels.
Begin with one original discussion prompt
The prompt, Chinese response, translations and checking questions in this worked example are original editorial material created for PAIRO. They were not copied or adapted from an MOE document, textbook, school worksheet, assessment book, specimen paper or examination question. The situation is constructed for language discussion and does not describe a named school, actual policy, learner or lesson.
A one-line starting answer is: 我认为学校应该鼓励学生在课间做一些简单的运动。 Its exact English meaning is: “I think schools should encourage students to do some simple exercise during recess.” This sentence answers the position clearly, but the question also asks 为什么. Repeating the position in different words would add length without answering that second part. The next step must supply a reason that genuinely supports the position.
Before extending the answer, underline the key limits in the prompt: schools should encourage, the activity is simple exercise, and the time is recess. A response about compulsory competitive training after school would move outside those limits. Likewise, a general statement that exercise is good would not yet explain why simple movement during recess is relevant. Keeping the prompt visible helps the learner select a reason and example that belong to this particular discussion.
Add a reason, example and closing connection
The reason is: 因为学生上了几节课以后,需要活动一下身体,也需要适当地放松精神。 Its exact English meaning is: “This is because, after several lessons, students need to move around and also take some time to relax mentally.” The sentence explains why a short period of movement may be relevant after lessons. It does not make a medical claim or promise that every student will concentrate better. The wording stays at the level of the constructed opinion and expresses both physical movement and mental relaxation naturally.
The example is: 例如,学生可以在指定的地方做伸展运动或慢走几分钟,不一定要进行激烈的活动。 Its exact translation is: “For example, students could stretch or walk slowly for a few minutes in a designated area; the activity need not be vigorous.” The example makes 简单的运动 concrete and keeps the activity within the recess context. It also avoids turning the answer into a claim about intensive exercise or a particular school’s facilities.
The connection is: 所以,只要学校说明安全规则,简单的课间运动可以帮助学生以更好的状态回到课堂。 Its exact translation is: “Therefore, as long as the school explains the safety rules, simple recess exercise can help students return to class in a better state.” This returns to the school’s role and the original proposal. The safety condition is part of the constructed reasoning; it is not a report of a named school’s policy or a guarantee about health, behaviour or academic performance.

— scrollable table| Step | Chinese purpose | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| 回答 — answer | 我认为学校应该鼓励…… | States the position directly. |
| 理由 — reason | 因为学生上了几节课以后…… | Explains why movement is relevant. |
| 例子 — example | 例如,学生可以…… | Shows what simple exercise could mean. |
| 回扣问题 — connect | 所以,只要学校说明…… | Returns to the school and recess context. |
Read the four sentences together and listen for one line of reasoning rather than four separate cards. The position supports simple recess movement. The reason identifies a need after lessons. The example proposes stretching or slow walking in a designated area. The final sentence adds a safety condition and returns to class. If a new sentence does not strengthen that line, remove it or explain its connection. Development comes from relevance, not from collecting more points.
Read the complete response without losing natural delivery
The exact full translation is: “I think schools should encourage students to do some simple exercise during recess. This is because, after several lessons, students need to move around and also take some time to relax mentally. For example, students could stretch or walk slowly for a few minutes in a designated area; the activity need not be vigorous. Therefore, as long as the school explains the safety rules, simple recess exercise can help students return to class in a better state.” The translation preserves each relationship without dictating Chinese word order.
Do not require the learner to memorise this paragraph verbatim. Cover the model and ask for the position first. Then prompt for one reason and one example in the learner’s own suitable words. If the response remains clear with a different connective or a shorter final sentence, discuss why it works. Rehearsal should increase control over the idea, not make delivery sound like a recited passage that cannot adapt to a follow-up.
Pausing briefly between the four ideas can help a listener follow the development, but fluency does not mean racing through every sentence. Ask the learner to stress the key relation: after several lessons, some simple movement is proposed; the example remains gentle; safety rules provide a condition. Pronunciation and pacing feedback should be specific and age-appropriate. This article does not establish one ideal response length or claim that using four visible connectives earns a particular result.
Check relevance before polishing expression
Use four checking questions after the first attempt. Did the response answer the position in the prompt? Is the reason understandable rather than circular? Does the example illustrate that reason? Does the ending connect to the original question? A response can contain accurate Chinese sentences and still drift if the example discusses a different activity or the ending introduces an unrelated benefit. Check the reasoning before replacing simple words with more difficult ones.
- Say the direct answer in one sentence and confirm that it addresses the actual prompt.
- Add one reason, then ask whether it explains the position rather than merely repeating it.
- Choose one concrete example that a listener can connect to the reason.
- Close by returning to the question, while avoiding a guarantee or an invented school policy.
- Listen to the whole response and revise the weakest link instead of adding another unrelated point.
If the learner gives only the opening sentence, ask “为什么?” and wait. If the reason is clear but abstract, ask for one example. If the example is relevant but the final link is missing, ask how it supports the original position. These prompts reveal the next step without supplying an entire answer immediately. Support can then fade: move from four cue cards to two keywords, and later to the spoken question alone.
A specific fading routine I would use is: 我会给学生十秒,只为“理由”和“例子”各写一个关键词,不能写完整句子;回答后,再请他指出哪一句把例子和题目联系起来。这样更容易看出他是在组织内容,而不是照着范文念。 Its exact English meaning is: “I would give the learner ten seconds to write one keyword each for the reason and example, not full sentences; after the response, I would ask which sentence connects the example to the question. This makes it easier to see whether the learner is organising ideas rather than reciting the model.”
Vary the question while preserving the reasoning habit
For another practice round, keep the topic but change the position: a learner may argue that schools should encourage movement but should also leave a quiet option. The reason, example and connection must then be rebuilt rather than copied. Later, change the topic while keeping the four questions. This variation tests whether the learner understands the relationships or has memorised the recess paragraph as a fixed answer.
A parent who is less confident in Chinese can still listen for structure and use the exact translation to discuss meaning, then ask the learner to return to Chinese. For pronunciation, phrasing and alternative natural expressions, use school guidance or a reliable language reference. Avoid creating rigid rules from the English translation. Its purpose is to verify meaning alignment, not to supply a word-by-word route for producing the Chinese response.
The four-step ladder should become less visible as the learner gains control. Some questions need a concise answer; others invite more than one reason or a response to another viewpoint. The syllabus supports orderly, clear and context-sensitive speaking, but it does not prescribe this exact ladder. Treat the model as one bounded way to develop an original answer, preserve responsiveness, and make revision specific enough for a learner to act on.
