From Understanding the Passage to Writing a Precise Answer
Read the question, find a textual basis, and make a careful inference in Chinese.

Work out what the question actually asks
Understanding a Chinese passage and answering a question about it are connected tasks, but they are not identical. A reader may follow the events and still give an answer that describes the wrong moment or leaves the reason unstated. I use the constructed examples in this note to separate those steps: identify the task, locate a textual basis, make only a supported inference, and phrase the answer clearly. These examples are original practice material, not examination questions or accounts of particular learners.
Start by reading the whole question before searching for familiar words. 谁 asks about a person; 为什么 asks for a reason; 从哪里看出 asks the reader to identify supporting details. These are starting cues, not a complete question taxonomy. The rest of the sentence sets the scope. For example, asking why a character returned to a room differs from asking what the return reveals about the character. A response about personality does not automatically explain the immediate reason for an action.
Keep the learner’s exact subject and level in view. SEAB lists 2027 SEC G3 Chinese and Higher Chinese separately, and both syllabuses include reading comprehension. Their assessment arrangements differ: the Higher Chinese Paper 2 includes passage condensation, while the Chinese Paper 2 has its own language-use and comprehension components. This note offers a reading practice sequence, not a shared marking scheme. Check the applicable syllabus and the instructions on the actual task; these G3 references do not describe every learner’s subject level.
Find the detail that answers this question
Here is the complete constructed passage: 活动结束后,大家陆续离开了课室。小林走到门口,发现地上还散落着几张废纸。他把书包放在椅子上,捡起废纸,扔进垃圾桶后才离开。 In English: After the activity, everyone gradually left the classroom. Xiaolin reached the doorway and noticed a few pieces of waste paper still scattered on the floor. He put his schoolbag on a chair, picked up the paper, and left only after putting it into the rubbish bin. No earlier history or later outcome is supplied.
For 为什么小林没有马上离开课室?, meaning “Why did Xiaolin not leave the classroom immediately?”, the relevant detail begins when he notices the paper. A precise answer is 因为他发现地上还有废纸,便留下来把废纸捡起来,扔进垃圾桶后才离开。 This means that he noticed waste paper on the floor and stayed to pick it up, leaving after putting it into the bin. The answer connects the observation to the delay. Saying only that the activity ended repeats background information without explaining his choice.
Make an inference the passage can support
Now change the question: 从小林的行为可以看出他是个怎样的人?请说明理由。 This asks what kind of person Xiaolin appears to be from his behaviour, with a reason. One supported response is 小林是个有责任心的人。他发现地上还有废纸,便留下来收拾,没有直接离开。 In English: Xiaolin is responsible. When he noticed waste paper on the floor, he stayed to clear it up instead of leaving straight away. Here the quality is an inference, and the action provides the textual basis.
有责任心 is not the only possible description. 爱护环境, caring for the environment, can also be supported if the explanation connects it to clearing the litter. The task is to test the connection, not to hunt for one impressive adjective. By contrast, “he always wins the teacher’s praise” adds a repeated outcome the passage never mentions. “He was afraid of punishment” invents a motive. Plausible stories about a character remain guesses when the supplied text gives no basis for them.
Use words that preserve the relationship
Precise phrasing does not require replacing every word with a more difficult one. Begin with a sentence whose meaning is secure. In this passage, 才 in 扔进垃圾桶后才离开 emphasises that Xiaolin left only after disposing of the paper. Removing that relationship can weaken an explanation of why he did not leave immediately. Likewise, changing “noticed paper” into “was told to clean” changes the event. When paraphrasing, keep the actor, action, sequence, and reason consistent with the text.
An English gloss can help establish meaning, but do not translate it mechanically into Chinese word order. Say the intended answer aloud in simple Chinese, then write it. Check whether pronouns clearly refer to the right person and whether a connector expresses the relationship intended. 因为 introduces a reason; therefore, what follows should answer why, not merely name the next event. If the task specifically requests the learner’s own words, attend to that instruction while preserving the original meaning.
Compare what each response makes clear
The comparison below returns to the personality question, not the earlier question about the delay. “Stronger” means more precise and better supported within this constructed exercise; it does not predict marks. Read the Chinese answer first, then use the English explanation to check the relationship. A parent who is less comfortable reading Chinese can still ask which sentence supports the claim, while leaving uncertain vocabulary or grammar for checking with the teacher.

— scrollable table| Response | Chinese answer | English explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Too general | 小林是个很好的人。 | Xiaolin is a very good person. “Good” gives little information about the particular quality shown, and the answer supplies no supporting action. |
| Relevant detail without the inference | 小林把地上的废纸捡起来,扔进垃圾桶。 | Xiaolin picked up the waste paper and put it in the bin. The action is relevant, but the answer does not yet state the quality requested by this question. |
| Clearer and supported | 小林是个有责任心的人。他发现地上还有废纸,便留下来收拾,没有直接离开。 | Xiaolin is responsible: he stayed to clear the waste paper instead of leaving immediately. The answer states a quality and identifies the action supporting it. |
| Adds an unsupported claim | 小林很有责任心,所以老师每次都表扬他。 | Xiaolin is responsible, so the teacher praises him every time. The passage says nothing about the teacher’s response or repeated occasions; remove that invented claim. |
Check the answer against the question once more
- Name the task in ordinary language. Is the question asking what happened, why it happened, what a detail suggests, or something else? Include its stated scope and any instruction about evidence.
- Point to the textual basis before defending the answer. Read enough surrounding material to check the actor and sequence; do not rely on a familiar word alone.
- Separate the stated fact from the inference. Explain the connection, and remove a motive, habit, or result that the passage does not establish.
- Read the Chinese response as a complete answer. Check meaning, reference, and connectors, then compare it directly with the question rather than with a memorised sentence pattern.
For a short practice session, use one passage and change the question while keeping the evidence visible. Compare the reason question with the personality question above: the same event serves a different purpose in each answer. If an answer remains unclear, identify whether the difficulty lies in understanding the question, locating a detail, making an inference, or expressing it in Chinese. That gives the next practice attempt a manageable focus without turning every response into a fixed template.
